Whooper Swans in the Scottish Borders
Whooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus)
Large white swan with a wingspan of over 2 metres. It has a long, yellow and black bill, with the yellow coming to a point towards the tip of the bill. This distinguishes it from the smaller Bewick’s swan, a very occasional winter visitor which also has a yellow and black bill but with much more black at the tip. Whoopers arrive from Iceland in October and can be seen across the region till the end of March.
