Red Fox in the Scottish Borders
Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes)
The gorgeous red fox with its dog like face and bushy tail can be seen throughout the Borders.
Intelligent and curious, the fox is usually solitary, though the dog fox (male) will support a vixen (female) with cubs by bringing food for the young.
Fox usually live in burrows known as an earth but this adaptable creature can find a cosy home in any number of environments.
Red fox feed mainly on earthworms, rabbits, birds, insects and fruit. Their lifespan is relatively short at an average of just 18-24 months.
Though mostly nocturnal, the fox can be seen during daylight hours trotting gracefully through fields and woodland right across the region.
