Black Guillemots in the Scottish Borders

Black GuillemotsBlack Guillemot (Cepphus grylle)

Black guillemots (also known as ‘tysties’ in Scotland) nest in crevices in the rocks at the bottom of cliffs and in harbour walls. A predominantly black seabird, they have a white patch on both wings, and have striking red legs and feet. The inside of their mouth is also bright red. In the winter, their black feathers turn a pale grey. They often overwinter close to their breeding areas.

Some of the best places to see black guillemots in the Borders are along the Berwickshire coast and St Abb's NNR
