Otters in the Scottish Borders
European Otter (Lutra lutra)
Otters can be spotted on most waterways in the Scottish Borders. The best time of day for seeing these shy mammals is dawn and dusk, but it’s not uncommon to hear of people spotting them on their lunch break in any number of Border towns that have streams or rivers running through them like Hawick, Peebles and Galashiels.
Other good sites for Otter are
- Kelso Bridge, Swing Bridge at Melrose
- Almost any riverside walk could produce an otter, look for the signs, tracks in the mud or spraints on prominent rocks
- All along the coast line at St Abbs and Coldingham
