Osprey in the Scottish Borders
Osprey (Pandion haliaetus)
Osprey are a fish eating bird of prey. They are about the same size as a Red Kite but are recognisable by their very pale underside when in flight. They have a distinctive striped head and migrate from Western Africa every Spring to spend their summer in the UK. Ospreys can be seen April-September in the Borders area.
There are two places to view Ospreys by remote camera in the region - Kailzie Gardens and the Wild Watch Centre at Glentress Forest - both sites are just outside Peebles and have been streaming live footage since 2004. Highlights are available to view out of season at Glentress. During the summer months Osprey can also be spotted above St Mary's Loch and Talla Reservoir.
