Common Porpoise & Common Dolphins in Scottish Borders
Common Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) and Common Dolphin (Delphinus delphis)
Common porpoises (also known as harbour porpoises) are one of the smallest marine mammals, and have a shorter, less distinct dorsal fin than bottlenose or common dolphins. They tend not to jump clear of the water, and a typical view is of a rolling back and fin just breaking the waves. They feed on herrings and sprats, and a good time to look out for them is when you can see large gatherings of seabirds on and above the surface of the sea – they are after the same food!
Common porpoises and dolphins can be seen throughout the year from in the waters around St Abb's to Fast Castle.
